Maybe the name just stuck around from antiquity, when there were all kids of crazy animal ideas? I’d like to think so. But I’m reading Moby Dick rn, which takes place in the 1800s, and he’s still referring to the whale’s “great mass of sperm” etc., so I really don’t know!

Also, I will forever defend the idea that megalodons were followed around by a cohort of smaller sharks not unlike smaller sharks today are followed by pilot fish. They would save energy by swimming on the larger shark's wake, and have a feast every time it caught a whale. :B
