As a clever child he studied Latin & was enrolled in the Uni. However he quickly moved to studying under a Leiden painter (1620s) & later the Amsterdam artist, Pieter Lastman. The Stoning of S Stephen (1625) shows Lastman’s influence.

Immerse yourself in the 1620s and 1630s at the Rubens House in Antwerp. Rubens designed the portico and adjacent studio where he painted many of his works, assisted by the young Van Dyck before he left for London in 1621.

Penitent St Jerome is known from two variations. de la Tour painted a number of duplicates. The first (1620s) is in Stockholm & the second at Grenoble. They do vary but were probably based on the same drawing (technically called a cartoon) - a not uncommon practise in art.
