https://t.co/mc1XLMqoK9 is inspired by Jacob Marrel.

A still life painter of the Dutch Golden Age, Marrel was active at the height of Tulip Mania in the 1630s.

A gifted artist, he hustled tulips the year history's first speculative bubble popped, 1637.

2/2 Amsterdam guard company of Captain Reinier Reael, 1637. Gorgeous painting begun by Frans Hals. But the sitters wouldn't come to Haarlem, and Hals didn't like commuting to Amsterdam. So it was finished by Pieter Codde.

Buried in the town archives, I found a document: the lost civilization of 1637.

Witnesses describe a creature descending toward the earth, blocking out the whole of the sun. There was a thrash of wings and a surge of wind that uprooted trees when everything went dark.

Zomerschoon tulip (1620) - painted ~1650s by the amazing Balthasar vd Ast. After 5y of trying to get my hands on this variety I've now managed to get hold of 5 bulbs. People traded fine canal houses for these, and it all came crashing down in 1637. I'll be celebrating all day.

Today 25 March 1677: Death of maybe THE greatest etcher/draughtsman Václav Hollar at Gardener’s Lane, Westminster.
It was Hollar who left us a glorious record of the Greenwich vista and Queen’s House c.1637... being paid the princely sum of 150p !
