I like to tweet this occasionally. It's my favourite painting. It's by John Hamilton Mortimer, dates to the 1770s, & shows a group of pals at an oyster party. And it demonstrates that #caricature could capture character, likeness, & humanity like nothing else, even 250 years ago.
I love this cbs ghosts character!! (she isn't real) (I made her up) (she is literally me but a ghost from the 1770s)

Paintings like the Archers & Three Ladies are based on compositions found in Classical sculpture. The Archers (1769), Duchess of Leinster (1770s), Omai (1776) & Three Ladies Adorning a Term of Hymen (1773)
Of all the excellent Joshua Reynolds vibes, I think 'posh 1770s ladies running amok' is my favourite
Modelled here beautifully by Diana, Viscountess Crosbie & Lady Jane Halliday
The 1770s were a period of intense genius for the artist. He sought to place the sitters in Van Dyck swagger, integrate them into a landscape & include dogs (if he could). Here is his lovely portrait of his wife & one of Ms Duncombe as well as Pomeranian Dogs
Some of these #fashionplates date from the 1770s, among the earliest in the history of fashion imagery.
By the end of the 1800s the number of fashion publications had increased with names like Petit courtier des dames (1821), La Mode Illustrée (1860) Harper’s Bazaar (1875) ⤵️
The Italian painter #FrancescoGuardi was well known for his #capricci, fantastical paintings which combined his scintillating brushwork with some recognisable elements and imaginative additions.
This fanciful scene depicts the Doge’s Palace in Venice, and dates to the 1770s.

If, like me, you have nowhere better to be, I recommend browsing the volumes of this 1770s book of animals

The 1770s was a time of transition in women’s dress, particularly for daywear. The robe à la française was reserved for formal wear which gave way to a new prominent ‘informal’ garment, the robe à l’anglaise. Read more at the link below!

I had a whole plan with the marvel posters. The first one would be in the 1770s, then a 40 year time skip to the french revolutionary wars/anglo maratha wars/war of 1812. i'd even started working on the iron man poster, as well as concepted thor, loki, and the winter solider.
