Odd complaint first:
Middle portion dragged a bit because it could've used a little more down time between action scenes.
Otherwise AXZ was another Great Season of Symphogear and starts and ends with an absolute bang.

From Two-Fisted Tails, Mar-Apr 1953. Jack Davis was a Navy vet from WWII who crafted this very empathetic resolution to what could be an adaptation of Shinano's or Taihou's sinkings. (The date given for this story is wrong, it's set in 1943.) (more.)

And Gaiman's work on "Sandman" is beautifully bittersweet.

The heartwarming idea that you don't have to be any one thing forever is juxtaposed against the reality that the world itself is an arbitrary and unfair place.
