Robert Eggers's "The Witch" is my favorite horror movie of the past 20 years. It's brilliant on all levels: story, cast, visuals & sound design. It's both a fairytale & a metaphor for growing up in a society of expectations. A must see. 10/10

Paul Schrader's "First Reformed" is a chilling look at environmentalism & religion. It's a grim & oppressive film with some really stunning image compositions. The story is very original. This is Ethan Hawke's best performance. Brilliant. 9/10

Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" is a brilliant deconstruction of pop culture, greed & image capitalism. It's both a crime drama & a comedy, with very dark implications. The cast is stellar. The visuals & music dualistic. A must see. 9/10

Jeremy Saulnier's "Green Room" is a thrilling look into the madness of racism, hate, & revenge. The story is original & set in the heart of Pacific Northwest's woods, giving the film a fairytale like vibe. Yelchin & Stewart are great. 8/10

Trey Edward Shults' "It Comes at Night" is a moody, slow & tense post-apocalyptic horror about the power of paranoia & mistrust of strangers. It's a chilling examination of how far a man will go for his family. Joel Edgerton is brilliant. 8/10

Yorgos Lanthimos's psychological thriller "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" is awesome. It's beautiful & frightening. As a modern day retelling of the Actaeon Myth, it shines with brilliance. All the characters are weird& chilling. A must see8/10

Ben Wheatley's "Free Fire" is hilarious, witty & at times bloody. It's ensemble cast is great with Sharlto Copley giving one of the funniest performances of his career. The action is intense & the banter between characters charming & fun. 8/10

Yorgos Lanthimos' "The Lobster" is an absurdist black comedy of the highest order. The film explores relationships & need for solace&solitude. Colin Farrell &Rachel Weisz are great. The cinematography is phenomenal. Dystopia with a laugh. 8/10

Denis Villeneuve's "Enemy" is Kafkaesque puzzle box film with so many different layers that it must be watched several times to fully understand. The philosophy & psychology on display is brilliant. And that final spider scene! Just wow! 7/10

Greta Gerwig's "Ladybird" is funny, subtle, & overflowing with details. The daughter/mother relationship is wonderfully written & shows us the never-ending inter-generational struggle for understanding. Saoirse Ronan is brilliant. 7/10
