Fun fact, AvX is NOT the first time Cyclops has been possessed by the Phoenix. He was possessed by her in a crossover event with the Teen Titans called "Apokolips... Now!" and he was able to fire a phoenix-shaped flame from his eyes.

I think Bendis is only a tiny part of the problem. Yes, it was his Avengers that invaded Utopia, he also wrote the infamous AvX, as did Hickman, Brubaker, Fraction and Aaron, and his X-Men were so cruel to Cyke, but his Cyclops was amazing.
