Calm Before the Danes: Guest Post by Annie Whitehead : My novel, To Be a Queen, tells the story of Aethelflaed, daughter of Alfred the Great. She effectively became ruler of what was by then little more than a satellite kingdom of Wessex. https://t.co/lpyDhWUbj8

With character names like Aethelflaed, Aethelred and Aelflaed, this series one-ups Tolkien in obsolescent proper noun usage. Fortunately, the characters are incredibly well-written, and the plot moves like a bullet train with payoff after payoff. Highly recommended. 9 out of 10.

Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians, was the only female ruler of an Anglo-Saxon kingdom (911 - 918) after her husband’s death. The daughter of Alfred the Great, she was a diplomat as well as a military leader, scoring several decisive victories over the Vikings.
