Our previous at Chancery Lane housed the Public Record Office until 1977 when we moved to Kew. The building suffered damage in the Second World War so the documents were moved out of Central London to keep them safe.

The archive is stored in the main BM building and some of it relates to the building itself. This shows the building works to repair the Iron Library in 1951 after bomb damage during WWII.

The was opened in 1977 after it outgrew its predecessor at Chancery Lane. The Brutalist building was designed to be bomb proof under the threat of the Cold War (Why not check out our to find out more?)
