On day 5 we're taking in the views of Bregenz in Austria captured by JMW Turner in the 1840s

Sir Michael Sadler bought this work and donated it to the Cooper Gallery in memory of his parents who had lived and worked in Barnsley.

To celebrate we’re going to focus on books from our local authors collection who all have a link with Barnsley. Starting with John Ward Roche who was headmaster of Holgate Grammar School and wrote books on the English language and economics.

Barry Hines was born in Hoyland Common, Barnsley. He left school without qualifications. He worked as an apprentice mining surveyor for the NCB before studying PE at college, then worked as a teacher in Hoyland Common and wrote novels in the school library after work.
