After being shipwrecked off Africa, Edward Bawden ended up a prisoner of the Vichy French in Casablanca. Here he painted this painting"Interned British officers taking a weekly bath". The prisoners were mistreated and Bawden had a mistrust of the French for the rest of his life.

Happy I have been admiring Edward Bawden's cat illustrations today. He had done in the 1950s a lot of work for Fortnum and Maison (a luxury department store) with Ruth Gill.
