This painting shows the area behind Stanley Spencer’s house, Fernlea, in Cookham, Berkshire. Completed after his return from service in WW1, the work is deliberately nostalgic; an elegy of sorts, his brother Sydney was killed in action in September 1918.
Today's dose of beauty: fairy tale illustrations by Scottish book artist Anne Anderson (1874-1952). Raised in Fife and Argentina, she trained at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, and then established a long, prolific illustration career from her home in rural Berkshire.
