The CPR was developed by Sir Alister Hardy during his time as Chief Zoologist on RRS Discovery voyage to the S. Atlantic (1925-27). The 1st CPR tow was in 1931 in the North Sea, with CPRs regularly deployed on several routes in the North Sea from 1946-present day

Seawater enters the front of the CPR and is filtered through a band of fine silk mesh which acts like a fishing net to catch the plankton. A 2nd band of silk covers the 1st to create a “plankton sandwich” which is fixed in-situ using a buffered formalin solution
