It depends if I'm working with inked work or not.

If the work is inked, I tend to fill in areas with the lightest color and then add shadows (image left)

If the work isn't inked, I tend to start with the darker colors and then add highlights (image right)

That Appleseed book was the first manga which pulled me into that art direction and got me interested into that style.
