Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) created this beautiful painting of Holywells Park in 1748-1750. It's his only known landscape of Ipswich and depicts the park's man-made reservoirs. The park is still a stunning part of our town, extending over 69 acres.

In the 1870s Hampstead residents afraid of the spread of smallpox opposed the location of the Fever Hospital. They suggested a less populous site (in red on map). In 1885 the Metropolitan Asylum Board moved all smallpox patients to hospital ships on the Thames

It's city day This dramatic painting depicts the moment the Nelson Monument in Glasgow Green was struck by lightning on 5th August 1810. John Knox committed it to paper at least 7 years after the event (the Cathedral on the left was not completed until 1816).
