In John Constable’s dramatic Stonehenge (1835), the wild sky reflects the disorder on the ground, & the ephemerality of the double rainbow contrasts with the age of the stones. Note the two observers among the ruins & the scampering hare at lower left, a late addition to the work

After Constable’s stormy sea at Brighton. Pastel on paper, 8/20. I discovered Constable’s plein air paint sketches last summer -love the drama in them more than his finished work. Shortly after, unrelated, decided to buy the flat in Hove. Hope to make some sea paintings one day

In 1811 he visited Salisbury to paint the spire. Barges on the Stour (1811), E Bergholt (c1813) & Golding Constable’s Flower Garden (1815) The latter is a breath of fresh air!

I second Waterloo Bridge! Monet’s drifting mists of fog and Constable’s tumultuous sky: (with urns... Richard, urns! A supreme courtly antiquity.😃)
Great webinar, many thanks to all.

Two quick studies I’ve done recently. The first is of John Constable’s ‘The Hay Wain’ which I did at The National Gallery yesterday. The second is of a local landscape I did today; I took some artistic license and left out the overhead cables! Both done in Procreate on my iPad.

John Constable’s ‘The Opening of Waterloo Bridge’ (‘Whitehall Stairs, June 18th, 1817), 1832, Collection, depicts the pomp and ceremony as seen from Whitehall Stairs. The Prince Regent is seen to be boarding the royal barge amidst a flotilla, on his way to open the bridge.
