Where in the great canon does he find his peers? Plenty animal hybrids in Durer, Bosch has copyrights for all bird monsters, Del Sarto does some great faces... To me, Octavio’s confident linework puts him closer to Degas’, one of the best draughtsmen of all times.

LRT I’m obsessed with paintings of what I call “a lover’s view in the morning after”: a naked back across the sheets, lit by the morning sun. If I have to pinpoint an origin for this fixation, it would probably be the time I saw Degas’ La Toilette in the Hermitage.

Sometimes, an artist’s private sketches reveal another side to that conveyed in their more public, finished works. These atmospheric sketches of outdoor scenes are taken from Edgar Degas’ copious notebooks (“carnets”) https://t.co/8IBM9BQAAO

Edgar Degas’s 1899 oil -Seated Bather, Woman pops from sumptuous background of warm colored fabrics, lovely impressionism! My recent WC Nude emerges from scratch paper background by lifting and coloring, more abstract:

The scene is viewed from above, as if from a theater box, and the top half of Degas’s composition depicts the wings, where the dancers from the corps de ballet can be seen waiting for their moment to go on stage.

drawings done with brush in *essence* (turpentine?) on tinted papers were instant coups de coeur. The essence enabled his brush to glide over the paper, imbuing the work with a fluidity and speed of execution that captures the dancers’ movements.

From the archive: Tissot and Manet attempt to help their friend Degas, 1868

provides a detailed critique of work-in-progress, while urges Degas to explore the London market with him.
