George Dibdin Pitt, actor, stage manager and author of more than 200 plays, was born in 1795. A prolific adapter of popular fiction (including he is perhaps best remembered for his Sweeney Todd play, The String of Pearls; or, The Fiend of Fleet Street (1847).
