Another theme was depicting Dublin. He did this in such a way as to bring the past to life & give an idea of Victorian & Edwardian life in the Capital. His Tea in the Garden depicts almost life sized figures under a stunning blue of leafy light. Although unfinished I love it!
Eventide by Sir William Orpen (1905). Listed as a West of Ireland scene but is more likely Cley-next-the-sea, Norfolk. Short of a model, Orpen painted himself in a dress (right).
Currently on display at Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, Dublin. One of four Orpen's @farmleighOPW
#Otd 1317: Edward Bruce’s army reached Castleknock, within sight of Dublin. Mayor of Dublin imprisoned Earl of Ulster, suspected of being sympathetic to Bruce. Dublin citizens burn some of N & W suburbs to prevent their use as a base! Might be why flames on coat of arms!?
