The newly-invented telescope may have been used by Adam Elsheimer in depicting the stars in this tiny A4 size ‘Flight into Egypt’ ~ the first naturalistic depiction of a night sky in Renaissance art (1609) & big influence on Rembrandt’s later version (R) https://t.co/Z0OPc1DDWl
A previously unknown painting is here identified as a work by Adam Elsheimer and dated to about 1599. Inspired by Elsheimer’s study of Titian’s ‘Martyrdom of St Lawrence’, it is his first nocturne with a religious subject.

Beep beep. It's the birthday of the curious German painter Adam Elsheimer (1578-1610). Died at 32. Not prolific. Painted mostly on copper. He was in Rome at exactly the same time as Caravaggio and his carefully observed night scenes were a huge influence on baroque art.#Elsheimer
Adam Elsheimer’s Flight into Egypt (1609), painted just a few months before his premature death, was the first naturalistic depiction of the night sky in Renaissance art, & influenced Rembrandt’s own Flight into Egypt (at R), done 30 years later
