@Taijuey Hard to beat late 80’s early 90’s. Top quality animation and design hadn’t become quite so recursive yet plus Gainax.

Again, not much I can say about FLCL (thanks to overhyping in the anglo sphere). The epitome of weird Gainax. Fantastic style. Never needed sequels. A+ no notes (but then again I've not watched it in a LONG time)

In case everyone doesn't know about it, Daicon IV is an opening animation that started with a girl with a bunny suit and includes every pop culture reference who worked on the form of Gainax.
