Physical and dietary differences. Note, though the scientific consensus is that Gastornis was a herbivore, I speculate that it was at least somewhat omnivorous like today’s ratites. Still definitely not an apex predator (2/3)

I see a lot of people on IG and tiktok confusing Gastornis (aka Diatryma) with terror birds and decided to make this to help illustrate the differences. (1/3)

Gastornis

For decades since it's initial discovery, gastornis was assumed to be a carnivore due to its large, strong beak. However, the beak did not have a hooked tip which is very common in other meat eating birds as it helps in killing prey and tearing off meat.

The chocobo bird (Final Fantasy) might’ve been based on gastornis.

Gastornis (pre-historic giant chicken) + Jacob's Sheep (4 horned heck sheep) = adorable TaunTaun cousin 🥺

Found an old drawing of a Gastornis I made some time back.

Always loved to envision these big boys coloration similar to a cassowary. I mean, they basically were overgrown cassowary ducks with industrial-sized nutcrackers for heads.

I'm a huge fan of ' work so you can imagine when he was selling some original art I jumped at the chance! Not only that but Gastornis is one of my favourite fossil birds. This is even more beautiful in person and larger than I expected! The detail is astounding! 😍

I've wanted to make a modern reconstruction of Gastornis for so long, and here it is! I found 's super interesting, and the chance to show how this bird's appearance has changed through time, from a terror crane to a fruit-eating frien! 🍐

New to the internet for My take on a Gastornis family for LTTAII. I've posted various WIPs of this over the years, but not the full, final version. You get to decide what happens to the chap in the lower-left corner: there's more than birds in this image.
