It’s John Gould (1804-1881) is famous for his bird illustrations, but did you know that many of them were created by his wife Elizabeth Gould (1804-1841)? These examples are from Mr Gould’s Tropical Birds (Ariel Press, 1955) in our collection🐦

While British poet and artist Edward Lear is best known for his nonsense poem, “The Owl and the Pussycat,” he also created incredible illustrations of birds - including these from John Gould’s The Birds of Europe (1832-37).

“Fowl Fridays” is a new series that provides a bird’s-eye view of our collections. This drawing depicts a family of Chinese rubythroats (alternatively named Mongolian rubythroat) and is a preliminary sketch for John Gould’s “Birds of Asia.”

Flicking through John Gould’s ‘Monograph of the Trochilidae’ (1849-61) for the first time and I was surprised to see that some of the hummingbirds have been heightened with metallic paint, they are SO beautiful!
