OTD in 1982, John Leeming - who shot down a Skyhawk with 30mm cannon during the war - was replaced on 809 NAS by Simon Hargreaves, who had been the first SHAR pilot to encounter the enemy when he intercepted an Argentine 707 on 21/4.

In 1982, two of 809’s pilots - CO Tim Gedge and Senior Pilot (SPLOT) Dave Braithwaite - were former 892 NAS Phantom pilots aboard Ark Royal. Braithwaite had also been to TOPGUN and loved the F-4. Reckoned he could make it dance!
