Born in Leeds, his family moved to Cornwall & then to Hertfordshire. His dad was involved in the design & manufacturing of fabrics. He was a C.O. in WWII & worked in farming. He then worked for Bernard Leach (1944-5) The Piano (1943) & Boats at Night (1947)

After a nearby bomb blast damaged his London studio in 1941 Henry Moore moved to Hertfordshire. He used his petrol allowance as an official war artist, driving weekly to London; a special permit enabled him to stay in any tube station, later drawing the sleepers from memory.

1575: Elizabeth de Vere was born in Hertfordshire. Considered an adept businesswoman she became Countess of Derby through her marriage prior to taking up the administrative duties of the Isle of Mann (Manx Çhiarn Vannin) in 1609. In 1612 she became the Lord of Mann.
