The illustrious #KunihikoIkuhara used scrapped ideas he had for the (not yet) released third Sailor Moon movie (as well as his experience with directing several Sailor Moon episodes) to create the renowned #RevolutionaryGirlUtena ! https://t.co/7hmxjt4u25
Recently, I've been excavating the post-#Utena dark ages of Be-Papas, an era we had limited access to that deserves exploring now! Here's two postcards by Chiho Saito from The World of S&M, a strange, honestly not very successful Ikuhara/Saito collab from 2003.
BSSM - 21
ED: IKUHARA!!!
ADs: Hiromi y Kazuko channnn
Studio: Live
@tacticalfiend I always just think back to that comment Ikuhara made in the CCA book where he said something like having the cartoony YAS designs mixed with the darker narratives made it a more memorable experience.
Ikuhara will create a woman who does some VILE shit some EVIL stuff and everyone in the audience will be like "my poor little meowmeow. My scrimblo. My blurbeoef. Im horse plinko" every single time
1997, part 1: Revolutionary Girl Utena
Ikuhara wasn't allowed to do weird avant-garde gay shit in Sailor Moon anymore so he said 'I'll get my own team and make my own damn show'. He somehow managed to cast the voice actor of Usagi/Sailor Moon as a sad sword lesbian. King shit.
1999: Revolutionary Girl Utena: Adolescence Apocalypse
The most aesthetically fascinating anime film I have ever seen. The pinnacle of Ikuhara's artistic inspirations in avant-garde film, theatre and 70s Shoujo. A surreal journey of self-discovery and Yuri classic. Made me cry.
One of the swag items in the 2013 #Utena Original Art Exhibition was this double-size postcard. One of eight, each featured a doodle by Ikuhara. This one is a clean version of the artwork Saito did for the OP/ED CD single released in 1997. Basically new. Zoom in and sigh. <3

Finished my Revolutionary Girl Utena Rewatch
Hit even harder this time around, Ikuhara is a genius everything about this series is just so damn good! Utena top 1 female MC and Akio might be top 1 villain for me too, need more people on this show!
Animerica Volume 9, #1 (February 2001)

- Interview with Kunihiko Ikuhara (Pages 3 - 5)
Ikuhara was also one of the leading directors of the 90s Sailor Moon anime (though iirc Nasu said he's not as familiar with Sailor Moon)
Theres a full interview where Nasu talks about some of how Utena, Evangelion etc. left a huge impact on him and I'll link below
My top 4 series directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara, such a masterclass director!!
