I mean, lizardmen from Warhammer are dealing quite well with the concept. Same with Ixalan dinosaurs from MtG ; you just need the right ambient to place them.

Now I totally get what you mean! I know I like some of the high render stuff (especially the Ixalan set), but you just can't beat the surreal nature of the more metaphorical pieces. It absolutely takes you to another world.
