Expelled from Germany in 1914, Jawlensky moved to Switzerland. After a hiatus in experimentation with the human form, Jawlensky produced perhaps his best-known series, the Mystical Heads (1917–19).

Today marks the birthday of Alexej von Jawlensky, one of the great Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) artists. He moved to Munich after his training and after visiting Paris was deeply impressed by Van Gogh. He spun VG's use of colour his own way, like in this 1913 work from @Pinakotheken
