German icon Max Schmeling, World Heavyweight Champion 1930 - 1932, died in 2005 aged 99. He refused to endorse Nazism, despite being feted by Hitler after knocking out Joe Louis in 1936. We now know that during the 1938 Kristallnacht, Schmeling saved two Jewish boys.
