Superman Val Zod is actually one of four black Kryptonian siblings who survived the destruction of krypton. We never see them but with Kent dead, Lois (RedTornado) and Batman2 (thomas) persuade Val to adopt the mantle of Superman 2. He's a pacifist tho an won't kill.
