Delightful fresco showing the wine god Bacchus and Mount Vesuvius. Bacchus became hugely popular at Pompeii where wine was produced on an industrial scale. He was often depicted in grape pressing rooms and domestic shrines.

Great way to round off 2019 at the exhibition Pics include the bronze counterweight from a set of scales, dining room mosaic of death, carbonised walnuts, & a carbonised loaf of bread. All from Pompeii or Herculaneum.

Remiss of me to forget another staple of the Pompeians’ diet: olives! Plenty of carbonised olives have been found in Pompeii but only one bottle of olive oil has. According to , curator of it still smells strongly of olives today.
