compare XP's tileset to VX era or MV
yeah sure xp was desaturated but I think it makes the tileset blends well to the surroundings.
MV and VX era kinda felt garish/bold. I think the more realistic texture it had, the more uncanny it looked with grid/non parallax maps

@RealProfTerra none. the shadow is blue multiply with orange edges and the ambient occlussion is dark brown normal layer

I often miss the days when games had more imaginative and artistic maps, rather than copy and pastes of the real world or things cut from open world maps.
Meanwhile, I've figured out how to blend the skin colors. Damn color ID maps.
