Cop craft would be one of the first I’d recommend but yeah, as you know, no English version. What about works by Ryohgo Narita like Baccano! I’ve also heard good things about Moribito, and one I enjoyed was Holmes of Kyoto.

Chagum, from Moribito, exemplifies a lot of what I love about this trope. A child through and through, they are forced to bear the burden of a great destiny and they do so periodically with grace and, at others times, with a great reluctance.
