“At last I was seeing the colour of a scarlet coat in the sun, the sheen of a clipped horse, with the lighting on fences, tree trunks, fields.”

These words written by Munnings are exemplified in Hunting Morning, painted when he was working in Cornwall.

Munnings clearly admired his tutor and writes in his autobiography:

“For the greater part of six years I worked under her … What lessons she gave in water-colour painting! Her enthusiasm was as great as her skill … what a lot I learned from Miss Offord!”

“..It is strange how the landscape of one county varies. In some districts there are still many oaks and elms. In others the trees are few, the landscape looking like a wilderness.”

Whilst living in Norwich in the 1890s, Munnings attended evening classes at the Norwich school of art.

Munnings wrote: "Norwich itself was then a beautiful place... I now realise what a playground it was for the artist. No wonder it had its famous Norwich School of Painters…”

In celebration of tonight, we share three versions of Munnings’ ‘Isabella’.

Munnings was clearly taken with this imagined heroine as he created several different pictures on the subject.

Ned Osborne was Munnings main model for the hunting scenes he painted in Cornwall.

“ …using him and the horses placed where I wanted them-in a pinewood, on a moor…”

The site for this scene is believed to be Trevelloe Woods near Lamorna.
