Today we remember the life of Oluwatoyin Salau, an activist, sister, daughter, and friend, who was murdered at the age of 19.

Oluwatoyin deserved to be seen, heard, loved, and protected.

We must commit to protecting Black girls and defending Black girlhood.

Trigger warning: sexual violence

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. I’m thinking of Alexis Crawford, Ruth George, Te’a Liger, and Oluwatoyin Salau who were all sexually assaulted and murdered.

Will never forget their names or their stories. They deserved better 💙

My new painting, “Nowhere”.
This is an answer to the question, “Where are women safe?”
This is for Oluwatoyin, who was not safe at home.
For Uwa, not safe in church.
For Tina, not safe on the road.
And the countless others lost.
Rest in power.
You’re safe now.
