I present you a challenge - Opabinia: a small prehistoric shrimp like creature from the Cambrian.

An exciting new Welsh fossil discovery from two of our Honorary Research Fellows for 460 million year old Mieridduryn bonniae may be the youngest Opabinia-like animal ever found by over 40 million years, and the first from outside N America https://t.co/YzNxcK5u00

A new Opabinia relative has been discovered but this time in the Ordovician! Mieridduryn was found in Wales with soft tissues preserved. Its name means "bramble-snout."

The prompt is “monstrous” so I’m sharing my Opabinia. I might not have thought of a 7 cm, long-extinct creature as monstrous, but a friend saw my sketch & asked nervously about it, so I imagine being smaller and meeting the 5-eyed critter with a clawed proboscis!

British Columbia. Opabinia likely caught prey with the grasping claws on the end of its long tubular proboscis (like an elephant's trunk). Even more astounding are the five eyes on stalks!

I printed my Opabinia block on assorted washi papers, including some marbled with suminagashi inks & made a series of collaged prints, each unique!

The fossils of this soft-bodied 7 cm long animal are found in Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale Lagerstätte (505 million years ago) of

For my 16th birthday I figured I would remake the second piece I ever posted to DeviantArt.
Four Cambrian critters: Opabinia, Hallucigenia, Pikaia and Haikouichthys.

New version on the left, old one on the right.

Okay. One of the invert pieces I have done is outdated (Opabinia), one is VERY inaccurate (Titanokorys but it's okay) and the other is unfinished (Eromangateuthis) but it's alright. Gotta make more!
