I learned that Rashōmon (羅 生 門) is a short story written by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. It appeared in 1915 in the magazine Shinshichō. It explores the dilemma of a man faced with the alternative of "starving or stealing". I think this story inspired a lot the plot of BSD.

Go Nagai’s Shuten-dōji

Very bizarre. It goes from being a Devilman/pulp horror to Rashōmon to Uchū Senkan Yamato (*meets Terminator) to A Neverending Story in OVA 4. Nagai was writing a cosmic epic, in the vein of Osamu Tezuka’s Pheonix!
*OVA 3 is an ‘80s film homage.
