The sparkling versatility of Eric Ravilious. @deborahjvass
Vibrant November 1933 calendar design, left. I need that kind of verve in my life!
Right, thankfully silent fireworks from: "High Street", written by J.M. Richards; illustrated by Eric Ravilious - London: 1938.

Love Eric Ravilious. Also love the magical realist paintings by his wife, Tirzah Garwood, who has been overlooked for far too long https://t.co/s2RilFvCBN
I had my own #SussexDay yesterday, not knowing there was such a thing. It's today apparently and a fine excuse for this quartet from Ravilious. Top left to bottom left 'Chalk Paths', 'Cuckmere Haven' , 'The Long Man' watercolour, 1939 & same 1929, wood engraving print on paper.
'As I looked at those grape-blue eyes, fringed with their fiery gold, the bleak face seemed to crumble back into the dusk; only the eyes lived on.'

'Because he was always up early and liked to catch the countryside at its first freshness, he had often drawn the sun. For many of his watercolours he had looked directly into it.'
Christopher Neve on Eric Ravilious.

Barrage Balloon, Kent coast, 1940 by Eric Ravilious. One of his numerous #WW2 works as an official war artist.
#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by Emily Sutton for "A First Book of the Sea" by @nicolakidsbooks (2018). Here's Lord Beauford's Scale, just right for the wet & windy weather. I love Sutton's illustrations, full of inventive techniques, beautiful observation, & a nod to Ravilious.
