❝Margot not only revivified the American picture book, but was one of the very few who helped elevate it to an art form.❞
—Maurice Sendak, talking about Margot Zemach
Zemach was born on this day, November 30, in 1931.
Then all around from far away across the world he smelled good things to eat. So he gave up being king of where the wild things are. But the wild things cried ”oh please don’t go — we will eat you up — we love you so.”
~ Maurice Sendak, Where the Wild Things Are (illustration)
Maurice Sendak, no stranger to criticism for presenting "inappropriate" content, had a response for his detractors: “The adults who are troubled by the scariness of [Max’s] fantasy forget that my hero is having the time of his life.”

@AuthorJRose For those who don't know, this is an illustration from a children's book version of Swan Lake. The illustrator was the late Trina Schart Hyman, who, pretty much like Maurice Sendak, seemed to push the boundaries of what's deemed safe for kids and God bless her for it.
"It is through fantasy that children achieve catharsis. It is the best means they have for taming Wild Things."
- Maurice Sendak, whose birthday is today
"#Art has always been my salvation."

You cannot write for children... They're much too complicated. You can only write books that are of interest to them.

"Kids don't know about best sellers. They go for what they enjoy. They aren't star chasers and they don't suck up. It's why I like them."

Remembering Maurice Sendak, #botd in 1928. He passed away on May 8, 2012, the day before Obama expressed public support for gay marriage.
My Brother’s Book was published posthumously, a universal “love letter to those who have gone before.”
