'Look for the picture books of...Ardizzone, Burningham, Browne, Blake, Shirley Hughes, the Ahlbergs & Sendak. Read them with your most adult awareness of life & literature & text, & you will see that the invitations they offer to young readers are far from infantile.'

Meek, 1988

E se a poesia construída em cima disso é monstruosa, nada melhor para expressar isso que os monstros de Maurice Sendak. Tão grotescos, mas ao mesmo tempo tão próximos de humanos.

is by Maurice Sendak. As it’s I’ll share some favourite LGBTQ illustrators this week. This is from “Lullabys and Night Songs” (Wilder/Engvick, 1965). Here’s Bobby Shaftoe’s sweetheart. But the dog (Sendak’s own Jennie) steals the show!

OUTSIDE OVER THERE (1981) by Maurice Sendak. The most disturbing children's picture book ever? A cautionary tale of inattentive babysitting & an obvious influence on the Jim Henson film Labyrinth. Beware the ice, ice baby!

Shout out for the older Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. The PERFECT Picture Book. "The day Max wore his wolf suit...his mother called him 'Wild Thing' & Max said, 'I'll eat you up.'" Magical! Day 8 Prompt Friday Reads

Some more picture book nostalgia today. This is the gruesome tale of The Terrible Tiger by Jack Prelutsky and Arnold Lobel. The tiger meets his match when he gobbles up a tailor but will this bad experience make him mend his wicked ways....? hmm. Reminds me of Gorey and Sendak.
