The reasoning is simple:
Maripili and Barkeep are the only dog beastmen with black coats from the same generation in TMMD

And...that's it really. Besides that and fluffy hair they have very little in common physically. They're not even modelled after the same breed

None of the elemental spirits in TMMD wear clothes to cover their chests, and this is because unlike the elemental spirit in PP(Marshall's mom) they have nothing to cover up top.
