The Spanish word "cipayo" is a derogatory term used for someone who serves foreign interests or a native Indian soldier of the British Raj period.
"Cipayo" is originally a Persian word ("sepâhi" سپاهی) which means "soldier". Came into Spanish via Portuguese and Urdu/Hindi.

The word “Cheetah” is derived from South Asian languages. It comes from the Urdu/Hindi word ćītā (Urdu: چیتا and Hindi: चीता) which itself is derived from the Sanskrit word चित्र (citra) meaning “multicoloured” or “spotted”. The Asiatic Cheetah is extinct in South Asia.

How my Urdu-Hindi students see me. Yes I’m a tenured professor who teaches language from the Intro level upwards. No, nobody is forcing me—I love this style of pedagogy alongside that of my content courses. I especially love it when heritage learners get chances I never got.
I titled this piece ‘Azadi’ which means freedom in my native language, Urdu.
This piece came from the continuous tug of war between the love for my birthplace that makes me want to stay- and my need to spread my wings and soar high away to a place that accepts me for who I am.
