#VanGogh's uncle was vice admiral of the Dutch navy and Vincent lived for a time with him in the Naval Yards in Amsterdam. In painting the sea Van Gogh paid tribute to his decorated uncle who was only one in a long list of important high ranking members of the Van Gogh clan.
#VanGogh's early studies of Dutch women knitting are in the tradition of 17th century Dutch painters like Vermeer or Maes. Vincent's knitters were likely his sisters or local inhabitants. They exude a quiet, reflective mood; suggesting that at this time his life was fulfilling.
#VanGogh's studies of sewing women had a rich legacy in Dutch art. It is noteworthy to compare Nicholas Maes 17th century red chalk drawing with Vincent's pencil & chalk rendition of a similar subject. Maes floods his figure in light whereas Van Gogh shades his figure in shadow.
#VanGogh's love of the laborer was a constant theme in his work. He identified with those who worked with their hands and cultivated the earth. As an artist he felt his calling was to cultivate culture and to create works of art that made a cultural contribution to humanity.

From #VanGogh's earliest portrait drawings of the early 1880's which he made in charcoal and pencil to the full-intensity color paintings at the end of the decade-- one finds a powerful, insightful and sensitive observer of the human experience. We are always touched by his art.
#VanGogh's radiant light Arles of 1888 gave way to the overcast sky and fragile tender pastureland of Auvers in 1890. The end of a difficult life was close at hand and the art reflected it perfectly.
Loving Vincent ★★★
The first fully hand painted animated feature. I felt the #rotoscoping effect was done better in #RichardLinklater's films. The story and the performances worked for me though. It's the best retelling of #VanGogh's last few days I've seen put to celluloid.
