Scottish weaver-poet William Thom was run over by a carriage at age 10 & became lame (the wealthy occupant gave 10s compensation). He worked as a weaver & itinerant flute player. He was desperately poor. (Poem from *Chambers's* 25 Dec 1841)

Introducing new working-class poet: Peter Kier, watch maker from Falkirk, published this elegy for his son in *Chambers's* (19 Nov 1836). The editorial headnote introduces Kier as a "humble" poet from a "mechanical profession."
