Seen at the Kunstkammer in Vienna: Allegory of Vanity, by Michel Erhart or Jörg Syrlin the Elder c. 1470. A metaphor of the transience of youth, this wooden sculpture was in the 19th century enclosed in a cabinet, which allowed only one figure to be seen through a narrow opening.
From the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna: X-Rays of Caravaggio's David and the head of Goliath (1600/01) show that he reused a wooden panel that another artist had used before, probably to save money. Earlier painting represents Venus, Mars, and Cupid in a late mannerist style.
