Wellington, commanding an Allied force, defeated Marshal Marmont's French army outside Salamanca 🇪🇸

The victory was one of Wellington's finest & showed how he could seize an opportunity on the offensive too.

Wellington, with his multinational staff, rides past British Infantry during the Waterloo Campaign.

In his iconic bicorn hat, Wellington wore cockades to represent the allied nations, which reflects Wellington's diplomacy in the coalition.

The 2nd Battle of Sorauren, 30 July 1813, was Soult’s last attempt to win a significant victory during the Pyrenees campaign.

It saw an attack along a longer front than previous assaults repulsed by Wellington's army.

It ended with a chaotic retreat for the French.

8 Jan 1812, Wellington's Anglo-Portuguese army undertook the siege of Ciudad Rodrigo.

The fortress-town fell swiftly, in only 11 days.

Troops battled with the weather, including icy rivers & freezing nights as well as the walls defended by est 1,800 French soldiers.

Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher died in 1819. Nicknamed Marshall Vorwärts, he is best known for liberating Germany from Napoleonic rule in 1813, coming to Wellington's aid at Waterloo in 1815, and taking over Napoleonic Twitter in 2020. Oh, and the elephants.

Sir Henry Hardinge was Wellington's second in his duel with Lord Winchilsea. Hardinge was also second to his brother in law, Lord Londonderry, who fought a duel with Cornet Battier, in 1824. The satirists had a field day (image: BM)

At one of the busiest road junctions in London is The Royal Exchange.

The statue is of The Duke of Wellington. The bronze used to cast it was sourced from enemy cannon captured during Wellington's continental campaigns. He was never shy of savouring a victory.
