Some protocetid artwork of mine for I adore this strange group of pioneering, leggy whales.

Clockwise from top left: the extra-weird Makaracetus, Aegicetus, Maiacetus and calf, and a comparison of Rodhocetus and Georgiacetus.

Happy Here's your daily reminder that giant raptorial sperm whales were a thing and we got shortchanged when none of them survived to modern times. U.u

It's an easy prompt for me to get art for because uh... I draw a lot of whales. I kinda like them.

Some of my whales can be on your walls if you go to my ko-fi shop-- https://t.co/twwiAE3K3e. And other things too :)

It’s such majestic beasts in both the oceans and as top holders of crypto and NFTs.

Today is but unfortunately, I have yet to draw any whales, which is a damn shame. As compensation, here’s Ichthyosaurs instead.

In this room you will see a whale;
huge creatures once found
in all oceans of the world....

Finally had time to pick this back up! Kelp Paddies often provide shelter for growing kelp forest denizens too! It's common to see them surrounded by a multitude of small fish. In the open ocean, nearly anything can be shelter!

- Welcome to one of my favorite micro-biomes, the Kelp Paddy! These can occur any time kelp is dislodged, whether because of storms, hot weather, or urchin disturbance. They play a vital role in acting as rest-stops for birds and large fish-

Well everyone here we go - AND the crossover episode (of many, I hope!) - these are the large fish predators of the California Current Ecosystem that you may get to encounter while whale watching here!

The return of means time to introduce the other beaked whale we'll meet for my Whales of California series. This is Cuvier's Beaked Whale (Ziphius cavirostris).

Their brilliant colors come from diatoms and other things that live on their skin.
