As America celebrates today,it's a chance to think about how the coal industry has shaped the landscape and culture here in Wales as well inspiring artists, including Josef Herman who was inspired by the mining community in South Wales whilst he lived in Ystradgynlais.

I really Polish exile Josef Herman. He worked just up the valley in Ystradgynlais from 1944. His paintings of miners & the village, where my grandmother was from, are very special. The huge Miners mural was displayed at the Festival of Britain in 1951.
