the Red Garra, also known as the doctor fish or nibble fish. They feed on detritus, algae, and tiny animals like zooplankton. They can also feed on human skin, specifically the stratum corneum skin layer of patients with psioriasis.

Lanternfishes are their name and zooplankton their game. Lanternfishes are one of the most abundant vertebrates on the planet and generally speaking, feast on zooplankton. I even recently published a paper in jmorph on lanternfish heterodont dentition!

I made plankton illustrations for science center Heureka a while back. Here's some zooplankton arranged as a very simple guide. Waters are full of odd creatures from all branches of life!

I have created two related projects for crowdsourced transcription of data that together constitute the Monterey Bay Historical Plankton Project. We have 14 years of weekly phytoplankton samples, and 9 years of weekly zooplankton samples, all collected at 6 stations in the bay.

Diatoms strike back https://t.co/EV2MoIagkm

Many species produce defensive chemicals when the cell is disrupted... which have a direct impact on the cell reproduction of zooplankton, such as ciliates, decreasing their population and therefore the diatom grazing.

These beautiful geometrical shapes are the skeletons of Radiolaria. Radiolaria are protozoa that are found as zooplankton throughout the ocean and their skeletal remains make up a large part of the cover of the ocean floor.
