The virgin walk was genuine bait intended to make people uncomfortable about common habits. And the chad was a response to that, opposing the common behaviors with absurdist exaggerated polar opposites.
That's what made it funny. Playing on common behavior. Not "me good you bad."

Not sure why I'd never seen this before, what a great little cop thriller. An intriguing mystery, good handling of the grit, grime and strange/sordid types of the backstreets of 70's L.A. Matthau was a master of deadpan wit and cynicism, makes for skilfull absurdist levity.
